How we voted
By Marshall Smith, Correspondent
Both Idyllwild at 72 percent and Garner Valley
at 73.8 percent topped 70-percent in voter turnout in a 2008 General
Election noteworthy for elevated turnout. But the communities’ hues
were distinctly different. Idyllwild voted dramatically blue — for
Barack Obama 56 to 39 percent — while Garner Valley voted even more
strongly red — for John McCain 63 to 34 percent.
Two additional Hill communities topped 60-percent turnout — Mountain
Center at 63.6 percent and Anza at 68 percent. Pine Cove tallied
57.9-percent turnout, but that relatively low figure may have been due
to confusion over having no polling place and the necessity for Pine
Cove residents to mail their ballots. Pine Cove residents expressed
dismay over the recent course of events — having their polling place
yanked by the county registrar of voters in January 2008, restored in
June 2008, then yanked again for the General Election.
Nancy Borchers, Pine Cove Property Owners Association (PCPOA)
president, plans to contact 3rd District Supervisor Jeff Stone about
polling place confusion, since her frequent calls to the registrar have
produced no explanation or satisfactory solution. Currently the county
requires precincts with fewer than 250 voters to vote by mail. Pine
Cove has more than 500 registered voters.
Lake Riverside had the lowest turnout at 40 percent.
The complexion of the vote in other Hill communities varied. Pine Cove
voted blue for Obama (53 to 45 percent); Anza red for McCain (61 to 34
percent); Mountain Center purple, a relatively close decision (51 for
McCain and 47 percent for Obama, with only two more votes for McCain
than Obama received); and Lake Riverside red for McCain (63 to 34
percent).
Overall county turnout, last updated Nov. 15, 2008 at 12:01 p.m., was
71.33 percent with Obama narrowly carrying the county with 49.53
percent (293,032 votes) over McCain who had 48.72 percent (288,266
votes).
Local precinct votes on other races and the propositions will be
reported as soon as released by the registrar.
